Key Stage 1 Curriculum Notes for Terms 1 & 2 (2009/2010)

The Great Fire of London

The children will be learning about life in England during the time of the Great Fire of London. The children will be using books, drama and ICT to investigate how the Great Fire of London started and how it spread so quickly and how eventually it stopped.
In Art and Design and Technology the children will be constructing houses and buildings which burnt during the Great Fire and creating pictures of the fire. The children will imagine they were working in the bakery where the fire started and make bread.
In Literacy the children will read about the Great Fire of London and then eventually write their own reports and stories about the fire.

Guy Fawkes and the Gun Powder Plot

Who was Guy Fawkes and why is he important to us today?
What was the Gun Powder Plot?
Why do we celebrate Bonfire Night?

Science

Investigating and grouping different types of materials. Changing materials. Light and Dark and using electricity

Baptism and Muslim naming ceremony
Festivals of Light
Learning about Divali and Christmas and the celebrations and traditions which are part of them.

ICT

Using graphics programs to draw pictures of the Great Fire of London and Christmas and Divali cards. Writing instructions for making cards. Using data handling programs to take surveys for the Christmas party.

Music

Exploring sounds- developing the children’s ability to identify different sounds and use them to respond to a stimulus. Exploring long and short sounds
