Geography

Geography is the study of people and places.  At Northbourne we believe that having a thorough knowledge of the world around us is vital if children are to understand the landscape in which we live.  During their time at Northbourne children will have the opportunity to study different places and themes.

The study of Geography should be stimulating and enjoyable, as well as developing the children’s investigative and questioning skills.  Children are encouraged to ask their own questions about what they are studying and use different resources in order to find the answers.  To help children gain a full understanding of what they are studying many different resources are used.  These include photographs, videos, maps and atlas and educational visits.

In Key Stage One children will think about the local geography of Didcot and compare it with an island environment, through looking at the ‘Katie Morag’ stories.  They study the landscape of the seaside.

In Key Stage Two children focus on broader themes of Geography.  They study rivers, coasts and mountains.  The pupils look more closely at the local environment and landscape and compare it with that of another British locality.  They also have the opportunity to compare the local geography with that of a Third World locality.  The children have the opportunity to conduct some investigative work by asking a question about the local environment and considering how they can find out the answer.
