Children with Special Needs

Northbourne School has a very positive history of identifying and supporting the learning of children with special educational needs. This includes the more able child, those with exceptional abilities, those who are experiencing learning difficulties, children with physical and sensory disabilities and those with emotional, developmental and behavioural problems.

We believe that all children should be helped to fulfil their maximum potential and achieve success through the provision of an appropriate and stimulating curriculum and their own personal effort. We operate in line with the Oxfordshire Code of Practice.

Mr Woods is the Special Needs Co-ordinator in the school and he is also the Special Needs Advisory and Support Teacher. Mr Woods spends one day per week leading the special needs work in the school.

We aim to identify children with special needs as early as possible. The class teacher is responsible for discussing concerns with Mr Woods, the Headteacher and the parents.

Different types of need require very different kinds of support. Mr. Woods is available for advice and consultation and the educational psychologist and other professional agencies are involved as necessary. Individual Education Plans are drawn up with parental involvement and reviewed each term.
