During the Rotten Roman topic Owl class’ role play corner was transformed into a luxurious Roman villa where children took part in a variety of Roman roles and tasks including designing , measuring and making their own Roman sandals. They expanded their empire by creating a huge villa in the old library where all their precious Roman creations were displayed and admired by other classes in the school. Even the teachers could be found in the villa enjoying Roman treats.
One of the highlights of this topic included a Roman day when children and staff became Romans for the day with a visit from a Celt to tell us about the Roman’s invasion. We also had a visit from a Roman soldier and created our own Roman plays and celebrated all our hard work with a class assembly to the whole school. In DT we designed and made our own delicious pasta dishes with some very interesting and tasty ingredients – watch out Jamie Oliver!
A child in the class described their enjoyment of the topic, ‘I’ve enjoyed learning about the amazing Rotten Romans. We have done lots of great things which have been really good fun. It’s been really interesting learning about the food the Romans ate and about all the things they did. We made marvellous mosaics, clay oil lamps and Roman coins. I was outspoken when I performed to the whole school in our class assembly! In maths we’ve done some amazing games!’
