Our Christian Foundation

As a Church Aided school, our ethos is underpinned by Christian values.  This is captured in our statement of Christian Distinctiveness:

As a church school, we believe that every child is loved and valued by God and we seek to encourage each child to achieve their full potential, regardless of their academic ability. Through our core values of love, community, integrity and perseverance we seek to foster in children an understanding of their role within the school and the wider community and a desire to achieve their best.

Of course, families of children of all faith and of none are welcome to join our inclusive and caring school community.


During their time at Northbourne, children are helped to understand the Biblical basis for each of our values. Some key scripture underpins this developing understanding:

Love: “Love is patient and kind…always supportive, loyal and helpful and trusting; love never fails” (I Corinthians 13:4-8)

Community: “Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (I John 4:11)

Integrity: “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31)

Perseverance: “Those who trust the Lord will find new strength.  They will be strong like eagles, soaring up on wings; they will walk and run without getting tired” (Isaiah 40:29-31)


We very much value our links with St. Peters’ Church.  We enjoy our termly church services and our God’s Storyteller worship, which Rev. As a Church Aided school, our governors determine the RE curriculum taught to pupils.  Our long-term plan for this is below.

Term 3 2016-17: This term’s core value is integrity, which often feels like one of the trickier ones to explain!  CS Lewis described integrity as doing the right thing even when no-one is watching, and class teachers and I have found this a useful way of capturing the meaning of this value for pupils.  Our pupils regularly show integrity in many ways; this week, we have discussed the importance of not giving in to peer pressure to do something if you know this is not the right thing to do.  This can be really hard – for adults and children – but is a key part of ensuring our actions are consistent with our thoughts and knowledge of right and wrong.

We will continue to reflect on what integrity means and why it is important as the term goes on.  As always, please let myself or a class teacher know if you have any thoughts or discussions around this at home.
